Fixing Gradient Banding in Print Files
Updated over 2 months ago

What is Gradient Banding?

Gradient banding is a common issue where you see distinct bands instead of a smooth gradient in printed materials. This can happen due to various factors, including limited color depth in the file or print process.

If you are using Canva, Figma, or Adobe Illustrator, please be aware that gradients should be made separately in Adobe Photoshop.

After the gradient file is ready - export your file and place (replace Illustrator gradient with a PNG file from Photoshop) it back into Canva, Figma, or Adobe Illustrator.

Steps to Fix Gradient Banding in Photoshop

  1. Make your gradient file in Photoshop with your measurements.

  2. Make sure it is in CMYK mode and 16 Bits

  3. Go to Filter, choose Noise, then - Add Noise

  4. Set it approximately 2-3% (check-in preview window if everything looks smooth)

  5. Export your file

Tips for Preparing Gradient Files for Print

  • Use High Resolution: Start with the highest resolution possible to reduce the risk of banding.

  • Add Noise: A small amount of noise can help to disguise banding.

  • Check Color Depth: Ensure your image is in a color mode with sufficient depth, like 16 bits/channel.

  • Soft Transitions: Use soft transitions between colors when creating the gradient.
