The AI Design Checker is a tool in the Selfnamed Design Studio that reviews your product design for print and compliance issues.
It scans your artwork, text, claims, and print setup, captures anything that could get the design rejected at print, and links you to each issue.
Finding the AI Design Checker in the Design Studio
The AI Design Checker sits in the left-hand toolbar of the Selfnamed Design Studio.
Select Check my score to run your first check.
After that, the button becomes Re-check.
The bottom of the panel shows when your design was last checked.
The checker also runs when you generate a mockup. If it finds issues, a notice appears above the mockup:
"Almost there! We found a few things that might affect the design's quality or compliance. Review and edit your design to reduce production delays."
Generating a mockup is never blocked. The notice lists issues to fix before you order.
Running the AI Design Checker
Run a check any time from the toolbar, or let it run when you generate a mockup. It should load in a few seconds while the software reads your full design and calculates your score.
When the check finishes, any issues appear as a list. Each issue has a title and a short line explaining what to change. Select an issue to jump to it in the Design Studio workspace, where the checker highlights the exact spot on your design.
Reading your design score
Your score appears as a bar at the top of the panel, filling from red to green as your design gets closer to print-ready. At 100%, your design has passed every automated check.
Fixing issues and running Re-check raises the score.
Each issue has one of three levels:
Must fix (red): could get your design rejected at print, so resolve these before finalizing. All compliance issues and hard print problems, such as low resolution.
Recommended (yellow): worth a look, though they don't block your order. Some are quality or legibility improvements, like small text or a formatting slip. Others are things the checker can't be certain about, such as overlapping elements you may have placed on purpose. Review each and decide what to change.
Optimized (green): an aspect your design already gets right or one you have fixed before re-check. It shows as a green check and counts toward your score.
What your design needs to pass
This is the core of the checker: the specific guidelines your design should meet to clear print and production. Use it as a guide to what your design can and can't include. Anything your design doesn't meet shows up as an issue you can view.
Compliance: text, claims, and labeling
What we check | What your design needs |
Trademarked names | Don't use protected trademarks like "Botox", even in comparisons like "Botox-like". Use compliant wording instead. |
Restricted terms | Use "Retinol" only if the formula actually contains it. "Phyto-retinol" and "bio-retinol" aren't allowed either. Try "retinol alternative". |
Organic claims | Use “organic” only if the product holds COSMOS Organic certification, and write it out in full as “COSMOS Organic Certified”, not just “organic”. |
Certified claims | Only make claims your product is certified for. If it isn't certified for a claim, remove the claim or choose a certified product. |
Prohibited and medical claims | Avoid claims cosmetics can't make or that cross into drug territory, and medical language like "clinic", "med-spa", or "Dr.". Reword to what the product actually does. |
Efficacy and absolute claims | Cosmetics can claim only surface-level effects. Avoid "restores", "repairs", or "tightens", and soften absolute wording to "helps reduce the appearance of". |
Ingredient and free-from claims | Keep "contains", "free of", and "free from" claims accurate to the formula. Avoid "paraben-free" and "sulfate-free", which EU rules don't allow. |
Certification logos | Show only certifications the product actually holds, at the correct ECOCERT tier (Natural or Organic). Remove any logo it doesn't hold. |
Protected logos | State claims like "cruelty-free" in words. Don't use protected logos (Leaping Bunny, PETA, Vegan Society) unless the product is certified. |
Product name | Don't imply an ingredient the formula doesn't contain, like "Caffeine" with no caffeine in it. |
Country of origin | These products are made in Latvia, so don't add another country's flag or a "Made in" line. |
Front-of-label volume | For US orders, show the volume on the front of the label, not only the back. |
Responsible Person | EU labeling needs a Responsible Person, not a "Distributed by" line. |
Marketing to children | Products aren't tested for children under 12, so don't target children in the wording or artwork. |
What we check | What your design needs |
Trademarked names | Don't use protected trademarks like "Botox", even in comparisons like "Botox-like". Use compliant wording instead. |
Design: artwork and print setup
What we check | What your design needs |
Correct volume | Show the right volume for this product, with the correct number and unit (ml, not grams). |
No placeholder text | Replace all template placeholder text, like "Your text here", with your own before ordering. |
The right design, filled in | Add a design to every label and box, and check it's the correct one for this product, not empty, duplicated, or another product's design. |
Print-ready files | Upload print-ready files at 300 DPI or higher. Screen-resolution or preview files print blurry. |
Inside the safe zone | Keep text and key elements inside the red safe line, off the canvas edge, and out of the trim margin, so nothing is cut off. |
Clear of reserved zones | Keep artwork off reserved areas like the QR code and ingredient panel so they stay readable and scannable. |
Barcode placement | Put the barcode in the correct zone, at the right size, without overlapping other content. |
Text off the folds | Keep text within a single panel so it isn't creased along a fold. Images can span panels. |
Readable text | Use text large enough to read in print, with enough contrast between the text and its background. |
Full-size label | Scale the artwork to fill the template, with no gray strip along the edge. |
No template artifacts | Remove template layers, guideline boxes, and bleed lines before ordering. |
Correct color setup | Use CMYK for print, not RGB, and check for problems like white gaps on a panel. |
Spelling and finish | Check spelling and formatting so nothing reads as unfinished. |
How the Selfnamed team reviews your design
Our production team reviews every order before it goes to print. The AI Design Checker runs first and shows you the issues first, so you can fix them proactively.
A green score means your design passed most or all automated checks.
The team gives final approval and will contact you if they find anything else.
A Recommended flag does not block your order.
Common questions
Does a 100% score guarantee approval?
No. A full score means your design passed every automated check, which covers the most common reasons designs get held up. The Selfnamed team reviews every order before print and will contact you if anything else comes up.
Can I order while issues are flagged?
Resolve any Must-fix issues first, since they would likely be rejected at print. Recommended issues do not block your order, though it's worth reviewing them.
Does the AI Design Checker edit my design?
No. It flags issues and links you to each one. You make the edits in Design Studio.
My text is flagged for crossing a fold, but my image isn't. Why?
Text that runs across a fold gets creased and hard to read, so the checker flags it. Images can span panels without a problem, so those are not reported.
I don't think a flag applies to my design. What now?
For a Recommended issue, review it and carry on. For a Must-fix issue that seems wrong, contact support and the Selfnamed team will take a look.
