Can I submit my VAT ID to avoid VAT charges for orders within the EU?

If you have registered your company in the European Union and have a valid EU VAT number, you can submit your VAT ID in your Selfnamed profile. Once your application is confirmed, we won’t charge VAT for products that are in the EU.

Here’s how to set it up:

  1. Log into your Selfnamed profile, and go to the Business & VAT section in your Dashboard.

  2. Fill out your Company details – company name, registration number, VAT ID, and upload your VAT certificate. A VAT certificate is given to you when you register to become a VAT payer. This depends on where you register, since some countries don’t distribute VAT certificates. If you don’t have a VAT certificate, you can submit an invoice where your business name and VAT ID are visible.

Important: the process of VAT ID verification is automated, so you need to make sure that you enter the details precisely – your company name needs to be submitted exactly as it appears in the official registry (including punctuation, diacritics, abbreviations, and legal suffixes). Otherwise, we won’t be able to verify your VAT ID registration.

To double check your company name precisely or check if you have a valid VAT number, you can use this registry: https://ec.europa.eu/taxation_customs/vies/#/vat-validation

  3. Once you’ve added all the details, press Save to submit your application.

VAT verification statuses explained

There are 3 statuses that can appear once you have submitted your company details:

  • Verified: your VAT ID has been checked, is valid, and VAT won’t be added to your EU orders.
We automatically re-verify VAT ID status every 6 months to make sure your entered data remains valid over time. If your VAT ID status changes after this re-verification, you’ll be notified by email. If nothing has changed, you’ll keep your status. If at any point there are changes to your business information, please resubmit your company details and VAT ID.

  • Rejected: there are two reasons why your VAT ID application may be rejected – the VAT ID you submitted is invalid / doesn’t exist or your VAT ID is valid but your company name doesn’t match the entered VAT ID. In this case, make sure you enter the details precisely as they appear in the official registry once you resubmit.

  • Pending: in case there is a system issue, you might see a “Pending” status. If that happens, no need to worry, your application will be reviewed within 48 hours, and you’ll receive an email once it has been verified. Note that you won’t be able to make any changes to your company data while your application is in the “Pending” status.
